In 2025, we published our kitesurfing travel guide for Spain in June with a matching kitespot map. We then set off on another big kite road trip, this time with the four of us and a new “old” camper. The destination is the entire coast of France. We will be sharing our experiences again in our 7th kitesurfing travel guide: Kitesurfing in France.
The second longest coastline in Europe
In the summer of 2025, we traveled to France for almost five months and planned to explore the entire coast. So far, we have explored the Mediterranean and discovered many kite spots and met lots of nice people along the way. After the first few weeks on the Mediterranean coast, we were already pleasantly surprised. We are currently traveling along the Atlantic where there are still many exciting spots to discover.
France is very diverse. There are large lagoons and beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean coast, where the strong Tramontane and Mistral north winds provide plenty of kite pressure. On the Atlantic, seemingly endless sandy beaches, strong north-westerly winds and good waves await you. In Brittany and Normandy, you will encounter rugged coasts that are particularly interesting for experienced kiters. Depending on the region, you have good conditions for kitesurfing almost all year round.
It is very hot in the south in summer, but the Atlantic does not always cool you down either. However, the temperatures are usually more pleasant on the Atlantic and the nights are cooler, so it’s worth bringing warm clothing in the camper. It can rain more frequently in the low season, but it often clears up quickly on the coast. In France, you will regularly meet other campers, with sports ranging from cycling and surfing to windsurfing and kitesurfing. But there are also lots of wingfoilers out and about.
Until now, France has always been the country we drive through when we want to go to Spain or Portugal. But so far we’ve been able to discover some good things and have always received a very positive welcome from the locals. We have tested some good kite spots, braved the heat, found alternatives for higher campers (many height restrictions) and definitely see France as a good destination. We are looking forward to seeing what else awaits us in the north.
France in figures
France has a total area of 551,695 km² and a coastline of 5500 km, with 5000 km belonging to the mainland. This makes France the third largest country in Europe, but it has the second longest coastline after Norway. France lies on two seas, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, which in itself makes for a very diverse coastline. In addition to miles of sandy beaches, there are also many cliffs with small bays, all offering different conditions for many water sports.
France has 68.52 million inhabitants and the capital is Paris. The highest mountain is Mont Blanc at 4806 meters. It lies on the border with Italy and is also the highest mountain in the Alps. In winter, you can go skiing in France, especially in the Alps. There are also ski resorts in the Pyrenees on the border with Spain and along the Massif Central and Vosges mountains. The largest lake is

The best time to travel to France
France is very versatile due to its long coastline on the Mediterranean and especially the Atlantic. The best wind conditions for kitesurfing are from April to October. In midsummer, it can get too hot on the Mediterranean, which can make it too hot for thermals. In the Mediterranean, the Tramontane and Mistral are particularly well-known for their strong and often constant winds. On the Atlantic, north-west/west winds bring good conditions, while in the fall and winter, strong storms can also cause a lot of wind and big waves.
The kitespots
We traveled the entire coast of France, spoke to many kite schools and locals and were able to find out a lot. Here are a few kite spots from our discovery. As soon as there is a kitespot description for a kitespot in the blog, it will be linked here. However, this may take some time, as we are still on the road and researching.

The arrival
How do we discover France? Since this year with our new old man, the Wonolix. It was built in 2001 and will hopefully take us to all new and old kite spots in the future. It also has a large kitchen, plenty of storage space for equipment and children’s toys and is winter-proof. We are currently planning future conversions and improvements.
When you arrived, we drove to France via Switzerland. Of course, it depends on where you want to start in France. But there’ll be more about that when we get back.
On the spot
In the run-up to the trip, we have already planned the kite spots we want to visit. We always learn more from the kite school or other kitesurfers on site. We also learn about special highlights of the environments, get tips and get all the info about the respective kitespots. This year we will be in France from June and the corresponding kite guide for France is expected to be published in mid-2027. You can find more in our KITEshop.
We are always on the road with our camper and can test and try everything perfectly. Here we are always happy to receive tips, great pitches and great experiences from you. What places, kitespots and sights can you recommend? We look forward to your tips.
